425 Park Avenue is an office skyscraper designed by architectural firm Foster + Partners, replacing a 388-foot (118 m) tall building designed by Kahn & Jacobs and built in 1954 – 1957.
The original building was demolished and replaced with the new one, more efficient and modern, but preserving about the 25% of the original structure: this expedient allowed to avoid a “1961 Zoning Resolution” restriction about the square footage, which otherwise would have had to be reduced. Preserving the original structure was very difficult during construction: first, floors from the top to the 18th were completely demolished, temporary steel structures were then installed to support the remaining 17 floors before further demolition; after the installation of as much as 750 tons of support structures, the rear side of the building was demolished. Twelve new jumbo columns were erected, six as exterior columns at the front of the building and the other six at the center of the building. The new building core was also built at the rear to connect to every other floor that would be remained in the new building while the rest of the unconnected floor slabs were demolished.
Finally, the building topped out on December 4, 2018, in a ceremony attended by lead architect Lord Norman Foster, and the renovation was completed in October 2022.
This MOC is a detailed replica of the building, designed with an Architecture style at a scale of 1:1000. By the way, this is the same scale of “World Trade Center (1973 – 2001)” and “World Financial Center” Architecture MOCs which you can find here in my website.
